In October of 1959, Wuxi School of Agricultural Machinery Manufacture (WSAMM) was founded wit
 h the attachment to Ministry of Agricultural Machinery.In March of 1979, WSAMM changed its name into Jiangsu Wuxi School of Machinery Manufacture (WSMM).
In 1994, WSMM was evaluated as National Key Secondary Technical School by former National Education Commission. In the same year, it set up higher vocational programs on a trial basis and was appointed as one of the 10 schools to run 5-year higher vocational education in the country.
In July of 1999, with approval of Ministry of Education, WSMM was upgraded to a full-time public higher vocational institute, called Wuxi Institute of Technology (WXIT), which was under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Education Office.
In 2006, WXIT was selected and approved as one of the first 28 constructing institutions in the project of “National Model Higher Technical College” by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance.
